Nepal Electricity Authority Brings Into Operation State-of-the-Art Data Center

The Nepal Electricity Authority has brought into operation a state-of-the-art data center in Kathmandu. This data center will help secure and make the authority’s information technology system more reliable. It will aid in data security, storage, and processing.

The Authority has brought into operation a state-of-the-art international-level data center alongside the Load Dispatch Center in Syuchatar, Kathmandu, capable of providing services to commercial companies in the future.

The three-story building, constructed using ‘pre-fabricated containers’, has a ground floor housing the monitoring, regulation, control, and security operation room for Kathmandu Valley’s underground electricity distribution system. The first floor contains offices and network operation rooms, while the topmost floor houses the data center.

The Authority has stated that the data center has been constructed following the international Tier 3 standards designated for data centers. It has been mentioned that this model data center, built under the Digital NEA program to fulfill the objective of making the Authority’s service delivery digital and modern, is the first of its kind in Nepal.

All data related to the Authority’s information technology, including servers, will be gradually integrated and stored in the data center. The Authority’s Executive Director, Kulman Ghising, said that with the data center becoming operational, the Authority is now working on creating its own private cloud for data storage.

Executive Director Ghising mentioned that the process of constructing a disaster recovery center at the new Butwal substation in Sunwal, Nawalparasi, has begun for data security. Until the construction of this disaster recovery center, the old data center at the Authority’s head office will be operated as a recovery center.
