Xiaomi after several weeks of rumors and leaks, officially presented Redmi 8 during an event in India. This is the brand’s latest ‘budget’ offering, presenting itself almost as a “Pro” variant of the newly introduced Redmi 8A.

In this new smartphone, the brand has focused on two segments that are extremely important for users looking for more affordable smartphones, battery life and photography. For this reason, the Redmi 8 comes equipped with a generous 5,000mAh battery and a dual rear camera.

A very interesting design for a budget smartphone
In terms of its design, the Redmi 8 is much more premium than 8A. Its rear panel features the ‘Aurora Mirror’ design with a gradient finish, with the center-mounted photo module finished in black. Still integrated in the photographic module, we have the digital printing and also the ‘Redmi’ branding.

On the front panel we have a drop-shaped notch at the top of the screen and a sizable lower margin chin, including the brand logo. However, its lateral margins are quite discreet.

The Redmi 8 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 SoC, paired with up to 4GB of RAM.

In terms of optics, the Redmi 8 houses the dual rear camera setup that includes a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 primary sensor with an f/1.8 lens and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The primary sensor on the rear camera setup is notably identical to what was featured on the Mi Mix 2S and Poco F1. Furthermore, there are preloaded AI Portrait and AI Scene Detection features. The phone is also touted to recognise 33 scene categories, including six India-specific categories.
